When I first met Takeaki, we were both in our twenties. He just quietly toiled at a small kiln situated within sight of the murmuring Azumi River.
Some things haven’t changed since then, like the way he silently moves his hands, as if quietly suppressing his passions, or his method of creating beautiful and innovative curves.
Takeaki employs Song dynasty pottery techniques, and he leaves no detail unattended, from wheel and glaze to the finest of touches.
A distinctive sense of Takeaki’s unique world pervades every aspect of his works.

お互いが二十代の頃に出会った頃の竹秋さんは
安曇川のせせらぎの水面が見える小さな窯場で
ただ黙って仕事をする人だった。
静かな情熱を抑えるように黙々と手を動かし
美しく斬新な曲線を生み出す姿は今も変わらない。
宋の技法に学びながら、轆轤や釉薬、微細なところほど余念を残さない。
だからこそ隅々に宿る竹秋さんならでは世界を感じることができる。

We fell in love with Yuka’s vessels at first sight. 
Just what attracted us so much, though, is difficult to express in words. 
Spare shapes, exquisite glazes, and delicate patterns come together to create vessels that are uniquely Yuka’s. 
Learning that the reliefs applied before firing did not come from molds but were each individually carved by Yuka herself was a surprise, one that brought to mind the image of a young girl offering flowers at some far-off temple.
Use them every day and they become familiar to your hands, an ever-blooming prayer flower.

生形由香展

生形さんの器には、一目惚れだった。
どこに魅せられたのか、とても言葉にしがたい。
余分なところのない形や滋味深い釉薬、
そして文様が自ずと生形さんならではの器になる。
焼成前に施されたレリーフが、型ではなく、
生形さんが一つ一つ彫り出していると知った時、
驚きとともに、異邦の寺院で花を供える少女の姿が浮かんできた。
毎日使うことで、手に馴染み、そこには祈りの花がいつも咲いている。

In all that meets our gaze on any given day, how much is colored by nature alone?
Rarely do we acknowledge or even notice that nature’s original colors are slipping away before our eyes.
The colors people saw in the Heian period continue to exist because people continue to make them as dyes.
The beauty of natural colors, their myriad shades and endless combinations, adds a proverbial touch of color to our lives.
Plant energies, transformed into dyes, become colors that invigorate and enliven us.
The Yoshioka house has always upheld this belief, hence their continued work with natural dyes.

天然の色、眼にふれる日常にどれほど残っているだろうか。
気づかない間に失っていく本来の色。
平安時代に見ていた色彩が今も変わらずここにあるのは、
ずっと染め続けている人々がいるから。
天然の色の美しさ、そのかさなりや組合わせが日々の暮らしに彩りを添える。
染料となる植物のエネルギーが色彩となって毎日の暮らしを健やかにしてくれる。
染司よしおかは昔からそう願い続け、そして染め続けている。

The Kunisaki Peninsula, where Katsu calls home, is a mysterious place.
Ancient worship sites and even older volcanic peaks cover the landscape as if conjured up by a magnetic force. Katsu’s day begins at dawn with sutra chanting at an uninhabited mountain temple.
And even while letting his children play in the rice paddies, it seems he is trying to silently convey a message of protection from the gods and buddhas that reside there.
He digs clay from the land, pulls the potter’s wheel, and fires the clay with wood.
I think all of this is Katsu’s own way of praying.

I’ve lived on the Kunisaki Peninsula for fourteen years.
On footpaths everywhere there are countless five-ring pagodas.
Even if you don't know all their histories, you naturally want to fold your hands in prayer to them.

菊池克 『陶迦葉展』

克さんの住む国東半島は不思議の地。
いにしえからの信仰や火山の長い歴史がそこここに磁界のように立ち現れる。
克さんの一日は、明け方に無住の山寺でお経を唱えることから始まる。
ひがな田んぼで子供たちを遊ばせる間も神仏に護られていることを無言で伝えようとしているのだろう。
その地で土を掘り、轆轤を引き、薪でその土を焼く。
全て、克さんなりの祈りなのだと思う。

国東半島に住み14年。
散歩をする道中のそこかしこに無数の五輪塔があり、由緒が分からずとも自然と手を合わせたくなります。
道具の中にそのデザインを取り込み、日々の暮らしの中で今あることの有難さをふと想う装置になればと思いました。

His touch transforms a volume of bundled and bound paper into something much more meaningful, something with the power to evoke distant memories buried deep within the recesses of the mind.
The touch, the smell, the margins, the textures—it all becomes white light in his hands.
Indeed, Hideyuki is a light sculptor.

掌中で白光になっていく。

You’ll find Gen’s studio at the base of Jadanigamine (Snake Valley Peak), to the northwest of Lake Biwa.
As a young man Gen found himself moved by the sight of kurimono (hollowed-out objects), and so chose to embark upon the woodworking path.
Fast forward some forty years, and Gen has become devoted to just making things.
The more you use his pieces, the more attached to them you become.
The more you use his pieces, the more beautiful they become.
Gen makes things you’ll want to use forever.

琵琶湖の西北、蛇谷ヶ峰の山麓に平松さんの工房はある。
若き日に見た刳ものに心が震え、木工の道に入る。
それから四十余年、ただ作ることに真摯に向き合ってきた。
使うほどに作品は使い手に寄り添い、使うほどに美しくなる。
いつまでも大切に使いたくなるものを平松さんは今日も作っている。

Kai's life in the mountains is quite intriguing.
He eats what he catches and stays warm.
He dedicates himself to fishing.
Fancying woodworking, he makes stylish leather goods too—and he uses them every day.
Kai for the first time has made “things to not use.”
We cannot help but be excited to behold the inner workings of Kai's mind, his raw creativity shaped by the kiln’s flames and brought to life.

HAKU marunouchi will hold an exhibition featuring the works of Kai Tsujimura. In addition to never-before-seen pieces, we will showcase Kai’s esteemed deep-black (hikidashiguro) and powder-white (kohiki) vessels. We hope you will enjoy these works, crafted by the artist deep in the mountains of Nara.

塊さんの山の暮らしは実に面白い。
獲ってきたものをなるべく食し、暖をとる。
魚釣りにも夢中になる。木工も楽しめば、革で洒落たものもつくる。
そしてそれを毎日使う。
塊さんが、初めて「使わないもの」をつくった。
塊さんの中にあるもの、それがそのまま現れて火で焼かれたのだとしたら楽しみで仕方ない。

このたび白marunouchiでは辻村塊さんの作品展を開催いたします。
初公開となるオブジェのほか、引出黒、粉引のうつわもご紹介します。奈良の奥山で一心につくられた作品をどうぞご覧ください。

Shingo considers himself less an artist than a craftsman. But he is very stylish, in fact, donning a fine hemp shirt patterned with Madras check the other day. Simplicity and modernity come and go, always natural/relaxed. In the hands of Tsukuda-san, wagatabon wooden trays also take on an air of refinement and captivating warmth. Wood crafts—raw material given shape and form—become companions to our lives. Tsukuda-san aids in that process. Combining skillful techniques and tools with an eye for selecting precious woods, he continually creates new contemporary pieces. In order to "make a living doing what he loves," as the saying goes, he works with the annual growth rings that accumulate in concentric circles on trees—surely not an easy endeavor, but that’s a tale for another time. Perhaps it is the pride of a craft that surpasses self expression.

眞吾さんは自らを作家といわず職人という。
実はとてもお洒落で、先日も上質な麻のシャツが粋なマドラスチェックだった。
飾り気のなさとモダンさが行ったり来たりして、いつも自然体。
我谷盆も佃さんの手にかかるとどこか洗練されて、しかもどこまでもあたたかい。
木という素材が形を得て、人の暮らしの伴侶となる。その手助けをしているのだ。
さらに言えば、熟練した技術と道具、銘木を選び出す眼を組み合わせて、
常に新しい今のものをうみだし続けている。
好きなことで食べていく。その為に積み重ねてきた年輪相手の努力は
並大抵ではなかったはずだが、そこは語らない。
自己表現を超えた工藝であることの誇りだろうか。
