Tomohiro Uchida's white porcelain is minimalistic yet tinged with a faint feeling of warmth.
Soft white pieces created with a tried-and-true wheel-throwing technique and careful polishing.
Uchida-san spends his days working on a potter's wheel he inherited from his master, Taizo Kuroda.

中世ヨーロッパの宗教画にはじまり、
江戸時代にはびいどろ絵と呼ばれたガラス絵。
今年、辻村史朗さんは満を持してガラス絵に取り組み、
瑞々しいアートピースが誕生しました。
東京で初のご紹介となる今展では、
永く制作しているドローイング作品や
油彩小品と併せて展示いたします。

Paintings on glass have a history of more than a thousand years, first as religious works in medieval Europe. The Japanese tradition, called bīdoro after the Portuguese word for glass, or vidro, traces to the Edo period.
Shiro Tsujimura took the plunge into glass painting this year. This exhibition features a fresh collection of his works, lustrous glass works presented alongside some of his well-loved drawings and small-size oil paintings.
We warmly invite you to come and see Shiro’s debut Tokyo exhibition.

紀平さんの仕事にはいつも優しい「ゆらぎ」を感じる。
掌で一つ一つを撫でるように、
木目に合わせて鑿やカンナがゆっくりと
その複雑な表情を磨き出していく。
同じ木目には二度と出会わない、
その唯一に寄りそう気持ちが作品に表れている。
紀平さんの「杉」とも重なってみえる。
一見すると単純に並ぶ木目もあれば、
はっと胸を掴まれるような複雑な杢。
そのどちらにも「ゆらぎ」の魅力が溢れている。

Yoshitake’s work always has a gentle “undulating” feel to it. As if he were caressing each piece with his palm, the chisel and the planer slowly polishing the intricate expressions of the wood along its natural grain.

One never encounters the same grain twice. Yoshitake’s work harnesses the feeling of being close to each piece of wood in all its uniqueness. The artist’s approach to “sugi” (Japanese cedar), to which he is especially drawn, is rooted in a similar sense of intimacy.

At first glance, some of the grain lines appear simple and others more complex and arresting. Yet all of them draw us in with their captivating “undulations.”

 個展の話を頂いたとき、
この空間に置かれた自分の器をうまくイメージする事ができなかった。
どうしようか悩むうち浮かんできたのが、
いつもと違う窯、違う焚き方をして出てきた結晶。
その色味は覗き込むほど不思議な色合いを帯び、美しいのか毒なのか、
本来極端なはずの境目が曖昧な様相をしている。
もともと和でも洋でもなかった私の器に
更にほんの少し
得体の知れない何かが、混じり込んだかの様に。

When I was first approached to hold a solo exhibition, I could not visualize my own works placed in this space. Just as I pondered what to do, strange crystalline shapes appeared on vessels I had fired in an unusual kiln using an unconventional technique. The more I stared at the curious and ambiguous forms, the more I wondered if they were beautiful or poisonous. It was as if my work, which has always been neither Japanese nor Western, had been infiltrated by something slightly mysterious…

When I first met Takeaki, we were both in our twenties. He just quietly toiled at a small kiln situated within sight of the murmuring Azumi River.
Some things haven’t changed since then, like the way he silently moves his hands, as if quietly suppressing his passions, or his method of creating beautiful and innovative curves.
Takeaki employs Song dynasty pottery techniques, and he leaves no detail unattended, from wheel and glaze to the finest of touches.
A distinctive sense of Takeaki’s unique world pervades every aspect of his works.

お互いが二十代の頃に出会った頃の竹秋さんは
安曇川のせせらぎの水面が見える小さな窯場で
ただ黙って仕事をする人だった。
静かな情熱を抑えるように黙々と手を動かし
美しく斬新な曲線を生み出す姿は今も変わらない。
宋の技法に学びながら、轆轤や釉薬、微細なところほど余念を残さない。
だからこそ隅々に宿る竹秋さんならでは世界を感じることができる。

We fell in love with Yuka’s vessels at first sight. 
Just what attracted us so much, though, is difficult to express in words. 
Spare shapes, exquisite glazes, and delicate patterns come together to create vessels that are uniquely Yuka’s. 
Learning that the reliefs applied before firing did not come from molds but were each individually carved by Yuka herself was a surprise, one that brought to mind the image of a young girl offering flowers at some far-off temple.
Use them every day and they become familiar to your hands, an ever-blooming prayer flower.

生形さんの器には、一目惚れだった。
どこに魅せられたのか、とても言葉にしがたい。
余分なところのない形や滋味深い釉薬、
そして文様が自ずと生形さんならではの器になる。
焼成前に施されたレリーフが、型ではなく、
生形さんが一つ一つ彫り出していると知った時、
驚きとともに、異邦の寺院で花を供える少女の姿が浮かんできた。
毎日使うことで、手に馴染み、そこには祈りの花がいつも咲いている。

In all that meets our gaze on any given day, how much is colored by nature alone?
Rarely do we acknowledge or even notice that nature’s original colors are slipping away before our eyes.
The colors people saw in the Heian period continue to exist because people continue to make them as dyes.
The beauty of natural colors, their myriad shades and endless combinations, adds a proverbial touch of color to our lives.
Plant energies, transformed into dyes, become colors that invigorate and enliven us.
The Yoshioka house has always upheld this belief, hence their continued work with natural dyes.
